Surgical errors lead to woman's brain damage

There's a reason why we in Ohio and Kentucky hold our hospitals to a higher standard of care. We don't want hospitals to be operated in such a manner that medical blunders can be excused.

Following a series of surgical errors, a 69-year old woman is now suffering severe brain damage due to what occurred during surgery. First, it appears that an improper incision resulted in internal bleeding and infection. And second, the infection remained untreated for a number of weeks. By the time the infection was treated with an additional surgical procedure, so much damage had been done that it is now likely the woman will never recover.

The woman was forced to remain in a hospital for a long period of time, and she is now confined to a nursing home. Since the surgical procedure, her family has described how her condition has deteriorated. "I saw her dwindle away," a daughter said. "She wasn't eating. She couldn't hold her head up."

Too often, we hear about brain injuries occurring due to medical mistakes. Unfortunately, such damage is almost always irreversible.

Attorneys take on medical malpractice cases because the injuries that occur are seldom minor in nature. However, such cases are frequently difficult to prosecute because hospitals will spend a great deal of money fighting such claims. Nevertheless, without such claims, hospitals would be allowed to continue making the same mistakes over and over.

This same hospital has made the news on a number of occasions, but often the news has not been positive. Approximately a month ago, a woman died while at the hospital to donate a kidney for her brother.
